When I began to consider how to write a welcome address, which truly related the sense of what it means and feels, to be a part of the HMS Exeter Association, it occurred to me, that a good place to start, is with my own experience. HMS Exeter hit early in the battle, withdrew. Two days later, she attempted to escape approaching Japanese forces but sank on 1 March in the Second Battle of the Java Sea. The Japanese picked up 714 officers and men from HMS Exeter together with survivors from HMS Encounter and Pope and they became prisoners of war. She was ordered in 1956 Built by Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth, United Kingdom. Laid down August 1, 1928 as a York Class Heavy Cruiser for the Royal Navy (RN).

On the 27th a combined ABDA – American British Dutch Australian – task force of ships had sustained heavy damage whilst attacking the Japanese invasion fleet heading for Java, now known as the First Battle of the Java Sea.
